Man Bit By Shark On Beach In Truro

TURRO, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Police on Cape Cod are investigating a report a person bit by a shark Wednesday.

Officials from the Town of Truro tell WBZ NewsRadio1030  that William Lytton, a 61-year-old male from Scarsdale, NY, suffered serious injuries to his leg and torso.

A Med Flight was called to Longhook Beach in Truro shortly before 4:30 P.M for an injured swimmer with a deep puncture wound. 

Timothy Collins, Truro Fire Chief, tells WBZ NewsRadio1030 that the swimmer who injured was found by first responders on the beach. Collins said it was determined the man's injuries on his leg was severe that he needed to be flown to Tufts Medical Center.

"I didn't see the injuries myself but they were severe enough that they needed to be sent to a trauma center," Collins said. 

Witnesses on scene described how beach goers on scene spriging into action 

"They had just called 911. Everyone was  springing into action to help. Make-Shift tourniquet applied.I was really impressed with everyone’s desire to help and make sure this person got the help they needed," said Mary Ellen on Twitter.

According to Robert Weinstein, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen in Truro described the scene has chaotic as several news helicopters from Boston descended over the scene.

"We have a cacophony of every idiot local news station in Boston...with their helicopters this has been going on for 45 minutes," Weinstein said.

Earlier in the day a whale watching boat reported seeing a great white shark swimming in the area.

In a post on the Truro's town website, officials announced that Longnook Beach would be closed to swimming until further notice.

According to the Shark Research Institute, there has been seven shark attacks in Massachusetts since 1830, the most recent was in September 2014 off Manomet Point in Plymouth County where a bodysurfer's board was bit by a shark.
