Gary Woodland Says Playing Kirk Hinrich in College Made Him Quit Basketball

Dan Patrick: “When did you realize the NBA wasn’t happening?”

Gary Woodland: “My first game in college I was playing at Washburn University and we were playing at Kansas and I was matched up against Kirk Hinrich. I found out in my first college basketball game that I needed to find something else to do because this wasn’t going to work out. I went 1 for 7 and I wasn’t going to stop shooting. I tried to take a charge but KU gets all the homer calls!”

Listen to 2019 US Open Champion Gary Woodland join The Dan Patrick Show as he spent a segment talking about a career in basketball he once had. Before playing golf at Kansas University, Gary actually was a Division-II basketball player at Washburn University.

Check out the segment above as Gary tells a story about his first ever collegiate game when his Washburn team played the no. 1 ranked Kansas Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse in 2002. Gary told Dan that he realized he better find another sport to play when he had to match up against three-time All-American Kirk Hinrich as a true freshman the year Kansas would make it all the way to the National Championship before losing to Carmelo Anthony's Syracuse team.
