Does Benching Starters in Preseason Cause More Injuries in Regular Season?

Seattle Seahawks v Pittsburgh Steelers
Colin Cowherd: “Did you notice how tired teams look in Week 1?? Tired athletes get hurt. I think we’ll see starters play a few more snaps in the preseason next year, this is a very cyclical league and things change constantly. The big trend in the NFL is to not play preseason but it feels like in the first couple weeks we’re having a lot of injuries because you’re asking athletes to go from zero to 60 and stuff snaps, stuff gets hurt, and players not used to getting hit.” (Full Audio at Bottom of Page)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he believes the ever forlorn NFL preseason will actually begin to become more relevant in the coming years when teams realize that benching starters during the summer exhibition games isn’t exactly the safest way to keep them upright in the regular season.

The biggest storyline of the early season has been the catastrophic injuries to some of the league’s best players, including Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, and Tyreek Hill.

Colin says it was obvious to him in the first two weeks that the league just wasn’t producing sharp football and that players looked fatigued in an overall brand of play that was vastly inferior.

Check out the audio below as Colin details why he believes the shoddy play and influx of injuries are being triggered by the lack of reps starters are getting in the preseason, and why he believes the preseason will make a comeback.
